..Thursday - Les Cayes


After breakfast we enjoyed some personal time to relax at the retreat center.   It was a good time to grab a cup of coffee and write in your journal.   Jim spent a lot of time organizing his and the group's photos and videos.   It will take him a good 70-hours of editing when he gets home.    Several of the team went down to the beach and the beautiful Caribbean to collect shells or enjoy a casual stroll.  I, on the other hand, went all-in and got in the water and enjoyed the heavy surf.   Very invigorating!

We departed for Les Cayes and the Nunemaker's house for lunch.   Afterwards the entire team visited the City of Lumiere Hospital.

Jan and Cindy (nurses) had some good discussions with the administrator and doctors.

After this visit, the team split up into two groups.  The larger group visited Etienne's farm and goat program north of Les Cayes.   Here's some pic's :



The smaller group visited 'Centre Lumiere', also known as the domestic center, whose mission is to educate, equip, disciple, and inspire young Haitian women toward personal development, economic independence, and the ability to lead a new generation of Haitian women.

They offer courses in embroidery, crotchet, sewing, cooking, baking, etiquette, health, domestic economics, and other subjects that enhance women's ability to effectively care for their children and families.   We were given a tour of the facilities.   Here are a few pic's :





We then visited their Boutique and looked over the beautiful craftsmanship!   Several hundred dollars later, we left with presents for friends & relatives!


An interesting fact about .. Les Cayes.    It was where John James Audubon was born in 1785, on his father's sugar cane plantation.   His father was a former French naval officer.

The Adventure BEGINS !! Feb.6 & 7

Bags packed a year ago and re-packed on Super Bowl Sunday are now ready for the long trip to Les Anglais with much needed supplies for the village. The team is starting to arrive with their large 50-lb suitcases and their roll-aboards and backpacks. Tim Kitch is attaching a special group marking yellow-green rope to each bag. Jim Shaw, team leader is handing out sheets containing activity and meeting schedules, work and school project and ladies tea assignments and current luggage content lists. Afterwards Jim asks everyone to grab their large suitcases and proceed to the American Airlines ticket agent.   It's quite a sight!    This circus train of 50-lb (elephant) bags are paraded up to the astonished looks of the ticket agents.   Jim gives his credit card to one and it flip-flops between two agents as they process this massive amount of luggage.    Four pieces turn out to be around 52-54 lbs. each.   Jim has to re-adjust some of the contents with some of the rem

..Saturday - travel day, homeward bound & final thoughts

We woke up to a beautiful sunrise in Dallas.    A good way to start our return!    God shined on us! Jim had commandeered the entire shuttle van the previous night for our entourage of people and luggage.   It was a tight fit.    Bob and Cindy spent the night in Minneapolis and were preparing to board a Delta plane to meet up with us in Portland. This was a screenshot of the seat screen on our final approach to PDX.    Home at last! we had taken a large loop pattern for our landing approach The adventure and mission was over.   We all proceeded to the baggage area and saw Bob & Cindy awaiting our arrival.   We had a glorious re-union and awaited all of our specially-marked large suitcases.    Friends and family met us and hugged us.    Once we assembled and double-checked our luggage, we gathered in a tight circle and Jim Shaw said a few words and thanked the team for a job well done.   Cindy offered up a prayer.    We hugged each other and left for home. ..Monday - Les Anglais

It's School Projects and Ladies' Tea Day!    Time to have fun with school kids.   Sissy head-lined the .. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade art project.   Helping were  .. Sue, Lynda, and Austin.   What fun ALL had! Joe and Don and Jan and Cindy had fun in the 5th and 6th grade classrooms helping the kids assemble solar flashlights.   We also asked the teachers to assemble a kit.   We first reviewed the schematic and pointed out the components.    I think they had fun!    Here's a few pictures : What a rewarding morning!!    When we sponsor a child in the Hope for Kidz Program for $334 a year, they attend classes, get de-wormed annually, and the entire school receives a hot meal every day!    Here's a class enjoying some rice and beans : After lunch, many of the team prepared for the womens' tea party : 150 gift bags were ready.    Fruit punch and M&M's and other goodies were served.   A fun and festive party ! wedding dres
